day 22 - Be an example

"Join with others in following my example, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you." Phillipians 3:17

I gotta tell you, I hate these passages. Why?

Do I really feel good abut the example I set? Do I really want people to live according to the pattern of my life? In some ways, Yes, but in a lot of ways no. I do some pretty stupid things, and am not living a Christ like life nearly as much as I should or want to.

I'm far more impressed with others. As an example, this week, I know that there are some people in our congregation who are making dinner for a family whose 2 year old is in the hospital having surgery. Imagine being the mom and dad of a two year old needing serious surgery. Sheesh! Dinner is the least of what we can do for them. (Email me if you wanna help-jim@standrewri.org) But, I'm so impressed by people who are leading these horrifically busy lives of ours, and they take time to make a meal for someone they don't really know that well.

Being in community is about being an example.

DO you have children? You know that yu are the most important role model in the world. Be an example. Be the person you want them to be.

That was another insightful point. Last night I was driving way too fast on the way home (by myself). Would I want that to be an example to my daughters? No, no way.

Today, like I have for the last 35 years, I play taps on Veteran's day at local Memorials. Is that being a role model for my children? Yes, definitely!

Your point is that some things you do are admirable and others are not. It's not easy always being a good model for your children and it's wise to look at the wonderful things that others are doing.
